Arms to Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is the world's second largest importer of major weapons, with the United States accounting for 78% of those imports according to the most recent SIPRI data. While the war in Yemen is not currently garnering the attention it had previously, the provision of weapons to Saudi Arabia has continued to be controversial topic during the Biden administration. Whether in relation to Saudi Arabia's cuts in oil production in 2022 or the pursuit of an Abraham Accord agreement that would provide weapons to it as part of a normalization effort with Israel, military assistance to Saudi Arabia remains a critical global security issue.

Here, we track candidates support to ongoing weapons sales and security assistance to Saudi Arabia.

Experts to contact*: Seth Binder, Sarah Leah Whitson, Nancy Okail, William Hartung, Jeff Abramson
*  These experts are available to discuss this issue and may have additional/alternate assessments. Inclusion on the Forum on the Arms Trade expert list does not indicate agreement with or endorsement of the opinions of others, or the endorsement of any candidate for political office.

Methodology note: A number of candidates have made comments about Saudi Arabia, including the Abraham Accords, but not specifically about weapons. Previous Abraham Accords agreements have generally included weapons and military support from the United States. Related statements, when identified, are included on individual candidate pages and summarized below.
