Edward J. Laurance is a former professor of Development Policy and Practice at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, where he has been teaching since 1992 and served as Dean from 2006 to 2009. He consults to the UN's Coordinating Action on Small Arms (CASA) program and is actively involved in the development and promotion of the International Small Arms Control Standards (ISACS). He also consults to the UN Development Program on comprehensive security approaches in fragile states. An expert with decades of experience in security and development, Dr. Laurance helped found the International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA) in 1999 and has consulted with the UN on multiple efforts, including the Panel of Experts on Small arms and Light weapons (1997), UN Register of Conventional Arms (UNROCA), and the Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects (UN PoA).
Ed Laurance holds a PhD in International Relations from the University of Pennsylvania, an MA in International Relations and Public Administration from Temple University, and a BS from the United States Military Academy
