Middle East | harm to civilians - casualties, human rights, development
Waleed Alhariri is US office director of the Sana'a Center for Strategic Studies. He is also a Fellow-in-Residence at Columbia Law School Human Rights Institute where he co-authored the report "Out of the Shadows: Recommendations to Advance Transparency in the Use of Lethal Force." A native Yemeni, his work focuses on the political, security, and human rights situation in Yemen, as well as UN-led efforts to resolve the conflict in Yemen. His ongoing work is featured on the renowned monthly report "The Yemen Review."
Prior to working at the Sana'a Center, Alhariri supported the development of the Arab Forum for Citizenship in Transition project with the International Peace Institute. In this period, Alhariri was also a member of the International Constitutional Court Project Ad Hoc Committee, chaired by former Tunisian President Dr. Moncef Marzouki. Alhariri also researched and monitored political and human rights developments with Human Rights Watch following the 2011 uprising in Yemen.
Alhariri is a founding Board Member of 260by26, a group of youth activists and entrepreneurs committed to ensuring 260 million children have quality education by 2026. He is also a Board Adviser at the Carnegie Council New Leaders program.
He holds a B.A. in political science and human rights from Hunter College, where his work was concentrated on international relations and international human rights law.
