Shobha Pradhan Shrestha is the founder and executive chair of Women for Peace and Democracy (WPD)–Nepal. She has worked for peace, gender equality, and democracy for more than for two decades. Shrestha is currently working with more than 2000 marginalized women and girls in the rural parts of Nepal focusing on building their capacity and facilitating their role in the process of socioeconomic and political change.
Shrestha has actively been campaigning on arms control issues since 2003, including at the negotiations and subsequent conferences of states parties for the Arms Trade Treaty. Shrestha is active in the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots and advocating for a new legally binding instrument to regulate the autonomous weapons systems, and also advocating for the Program of Action (PoA) to prevent, combat, and eradicate the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons in all its aspects.
Shrestha is a member of the international board of the Control Arms coalition and has previously served as the member secretary in South Asia Small Arms Network Nepal. She carried out a research on Small Arms Monitor–Nepal Chapter and is one of the authors of the book “Barrel of Gun,” published by SASA Net Nepal in April 2006. Shrestha was awarded with the 2014 Author E. Hughes Career Achievement Award for the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies, University of San Diego (California). She holds an MA in Peace and Justice Studies from the University of San Diego and a post graduate degree from BRAC Bangladesh in NGO Leadership and Management.
