Forum on the Arms Trade

The Forum on the Arms Trade is seeking to hire a six-month full-time media and program officer to continue to strengthen and grow awareness of and capabilities of its community of listed experts. Working with the Forum’s director, the person in this position will have significant responsibility for identification and outreach to media, creating and leading communications efforts across multiple platforms, as well as support to Forum programs and events. This position is virtual with meetings and communications generally occurring aligned to a U.S. East Coast schedule.
The Forum on the Arms Trade, now in its tenth year, is a global network of civil society experts and a point of contact for strengthening public efforts to address the humanitarian, economic and other implications of arms transfers, security assistance, and weapons use. It currently is a fiscally sponsored project of the Center for International Policy and employs a director. This position would be the second full-time position serving the Forum. At some point during the employment period, the Forum may become an independent non-profit, thereby changing the official employer.

* Strong communications and networking skills
* Strong computer skills, including with Google documents
* Excellent attention to detail and ability to take initiative
* English-language fluency
* Spanish-language fluency a plus
* Arms trade subject matter experience a definite plus, but not required
SALARY AND BENEFITS:
The salary will be between $55,000 and $65,000 base salary commensurate with experience. Benefits can include employer-provided health coverage; contribution to an individual retirement account; paid vacation, and family and sick leave. Applicants for this full-time position (with benefits) must be eligible to work in the United States.
This is a six-month, full-time position. Continuance beyond that period will be contingent on funds that have yet to be raised, and performance.

CORE POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
* Media and Communications
- Examine existing approaches and develop coherent media plan for the Forum
- Maintain/develop list of key media working on arms trade issues (building upon existing resources)
- Proactive outreach to media, responding to referral requests, possible coordination of briefings
- Lead social media efforts – currently Twitter-based, with some use of LinkedIn and Bluesky (and rarely Facebook and Instagram) – explore alternatives to Twitter
- Update and content creation for website
- Produce (or revamp) “The Week in Arms Trade Publications” newsletter
- Lead process to revamp experts section of website to be more like this (or similar) – possible complete overhaul of website
- Assist with event planning
- Liaise with Forum-listed experts to maintain internal listservs and discussions
- Assist with emerging expert program (English, and Spanish if possible)
- Possible maintenance of other web resources
- Possible assistance with fundraising, depending on experience
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
* Strong communications and networking skills
- Experience tracking and interacting with media
- Familiarity with electronic newsletters
- Familiarity, or ability to quickly learn, basic website management
- Experience building and communicating within a network
* Strong computer skills, including with Google documents
* Excellent attention to detail and ability to take initiative
* English-language fluency
* Spanish-language fluency a plus
* Arms trade subject matter experience a definite plus, but not required
