Program and Research Associate, Security Assistance Monitor
 
 
SECURITY ASSISTANCE MONITOR
 
The Security Assistance Monitor (SAM) is a program of the Center for International Policy dedicated to enhancing transparency and oversight of an increasingly central U.S. foreign policy tool: U.S. foreign military and police aid and U.S. arms sales. By providing journalists, policymakers, and civil society (in the United States and abroad) with comprehensive data on security assistance spending and with independent, data-driven research and analysis, we seek to inform and elevate the debate about the best use of this tool and to promote sustainable solutions.
 
JOB PROFILE
 
The Program and Research Associate will contribute research and provide programmatic support for SAM under the supervision of SAM’s Director. The primary area of focus will be on U.S. military and police assistance spending to countries and regions around the world. The Associate should have an understanding and experience with U.S. foreign and/or military policy and the U.S. policy-making process. Particular experience in U.S. security assistance would be an advantage.
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Maintain and update the program’s databases on U.S. security assistance worldwide, including submitting FOIA requests and ensuring quality and accuracy of content.
  • Help the Director with research and analysis on U.S. security assistance including writing relevant blogs posts and developing narrative-driven infographics.
  • Serve as a contact for media and other inquiries about the program and database.
  • Manage and oversee the website, including regular updates of relevant content and coordination with website’s developers.  
  • Implement the media strategy and maintain social media accounts, mailing lists, and media lists.
  • Manage the program’s interns including conducting intern recruitment and interviews.
  • ·Provide other program and research support as necessary.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in international relations, international development, or other related field, master’s degree preferred.
  • A minimum of 3 years of professional experience, preferably in an administrative and/or research role
  • Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to multi-task.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Strong problem solving, decision-making, and planning skills.
  • Ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team.
  • Familiarity with social media tools, blogging, and content management systems such as WordPress or Drupal.
  • Experience with database management systems and Adobe products is a plus.
