landmines and cluster munitions | Small arms and light weapons (SALW)
Markus Schindler is Program Manager at the Geneva-based Fondation suisse de déminage (FSD) and currently based in Ukraine, where he is leading the implementation of a large-scale mine action program. Living and working in active war zones and post conflict environments for over a decade, Schindler has been witness to the devastating impact of mines, cluster munitions and other explosive remnants of war (ERW) on communities and individuals. As a practitioner in the field of humanitarian mine action he has led efforts across multiple countries to reduce the impact of ERW, including in Ukraine, Iraq, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and the Philippines. As a researcher Schindler reflects on and shares his insights with the wider mine action community through journal articles. To further contribute to the development of best practice, he is also the editor and publisher of the Mine Action Weekly newsletter.
Schindler holds a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies from University College Cork and a Master’s Degree in Ethics – Economics, Law & Politics from Ruhr University Bochum.
